What is a Cupola?

And where do I get one?

Get a weathervane as a great gift for someone, no matter what their favorite hobby is.

In looking for weathervanes I kept seeing the word "cupola" but other than thinking it was something on top of the house I had no clear idea what it was. Ah ha! A learning experience was headed my way.

Wikipedia defines cupola as "In architecture, a cupola consists of a dome-shaped ornamental structure located on top of a larger roof or dome, often used as a lookout or to admit light and provide ventilation."

Well that makes sense. They look like little lighthouses to me. Cupolas are the structure the weather vane is mounted on. It serves as the base for the weathervane, so you have something solid and decorative to mount it to. What a great idea! A lot of cupolas, most of them actually, have windows so you could put a light inside and provide a nice decorative glow to the top of your house.

Where can I buy a cupola?

Good question. Cupolas are available at home improvement and hardware stores as well as from woodworking craftsman. It's also a fairly easy item to purchase online if you have the right measurements. If you're unsure you can browse the various retail websites to look at the hundreds of style options and then call the company you like and they can help you make sure your purchase is perfect.

A crafty individual could also look at pictures of the various cupolas and build one himself. If you're good with wood and/or metal this may be just the ticket if you need a hobby project and can create something with just a photo for inspiration.

These sites also sell cupolas.

The American Craftsman Corporation.  Creators of a line of copper rooftop cupolas using louvers and traditional styling.  They also offer other architectural copper products for the roof, and for the home and garden.  They are headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma. (I have family in Tulsa so I'm partial to this one)

Amish Woodworks.  Offer a variety of classic, prefabricated garden gazebos at their site.  They are based in Binghamton, New York.  Available outside the area in the form of knockdown kits.
